WHEELING, W.Va. (Jan. 10) – The Waynesburg University men's wrestling team traveled to Wheeling University on Saturday for a tri-match against the host Cardinals and Davis & Elkins. The Yellow Jackets fell 34-20 to the Senators before dropping a 41-15 final to Wheeling.

Waynesburg (1-6) took a 6-0 lead against D&E (3-7) thanks to a forfeit being awarded to sophomore Ryland Parker (Ravenal, S.C. / Ashley Ridge) at 125 pounds. The advantage was short-lived, as the Senators took the next five bouts and built a 30-6 advantage.

A forfeit to freshman Kaleb McCamick (Bridgeport, Ohio / Bridgeport) at 174 pounds preceded an impressive 15-0 technical fall (2:05) for junior Jessie Orbin (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) over Gavin Rodriguez-Cayro at 184 pounds.

Sophomore AJ Tomaino (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) nearly picked up a first-period pin when he locked in a cradle, but his opponent survived the fall attempt and came back to get the win at 197 pounds.

The first match of the night ended on a high note for the Jackets, as senior Alexander Paulsen (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) gutted out a 4-3 decision at heavyweight over Aidan Maldonado.

Waynesburg's second match of the day opened with Wheeling (5-1) picking up forfeits and 125 and 133 pounds. After the Cardinals won the first contested bout of the match to stretch their lead to 17-0, the Jackets got on the board with a forfeit at 149.

After Wheeling picked up wins at 157 and 165, Orbin struck for his second victory of the day, this time downing Xander Kartes 9-6 at 174. Tomaino made it two in a row for Waynesburg with a forfeit at 184, before the Cardinals closed out the night with wins at 197 and 285 pounds.

Waynesburg returns to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Thursday, Jan. 15, when it hosts Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Bethany for a senior night dual. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
