BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Jan. 17) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team lost a tightly-contested 73-71 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup to Geneva on Saturday.
Geneva (5-10, 2-4) began the game on a 6-0 run, but that would be its largest lead of the half, as Waynesburg scored the next five. Senior
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) scored seven of Waynesburg's (6-9, 2-4) first 13 points. A Geneva layup with five seconds left in the first quarter gave the Golden Tornadoes a one-point advantage (24-23) at the end of the period
The second quarter was a very different 10 minutes, as the two teams combined for just 23 points. Waynesburg got its biggest lead of the half (33-28) at the 4:07 mark, but Geneva was able to tie the score at 35-35 by the time halftime rolled around.
Juniors
Hannah Ault (Romney, W.Va. / Hampshire) and
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) scored five points each in the third quarter, but Waynesburg trailed 55-51 heading into the fourth.
The Jackets suffered a serious blow when Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) fouled out with 4:46 left in the game. She finished with a game-high 16 points and led the Yellow Jackets in assists (4) and steals (4). Her 13 rebounds allowed her to record her second double-double of the season.
Geneva took a 10-point lead early in the fourth, but Waynesburg responded with a 10-0 run amidst Friday fouling out to tie the score at 64-64. Geneva answered by scoring seven of the next nine to grab a 71-66 advantage with 43 seconds showing on the clock.
A layup from Mohrbacher made it a three-point game with 21 seconds left, leaving Waynesburg with no other choice but to play the foul game. Geneva was able to make its free throws, going up by five.
Junior
Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer from the volleyball 10-foot line, but it did not change the outcome. The shot was only the second made three-pointer of the game for Waynesburg, as they finished 2-for-15 from beyond the arc.
Mohrbacher joined Friday in reaching double digits in points and rebounds with 13 and 15, respectively. The latter of those two values was a game high. Henkins also reached double digits in scoring with 11 to go along with six rebounds.
Waynesburg returns home Wednesday to face fellow PAC South Division opponent, Bethany. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
