GREENSBURG, Pa. (Jan. 3) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team returned from its holiday hiatus on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets saw 10 of their own score at least two points each, as they won their last non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game of the season, defeating Pitt Greensburg, 77-46.
Junior guard
Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) scored the first four points of the game for Waynesburg (5-6), going 2-for-2 at the foul line before making a layup for her team's first field goal of the contest.
Despite Waynesburg being held scoreless by UPG for the first 3:45 of the game, the visitors were able to end the first quarter with an 11-point advantage (22-11), capped off by a three-ball from sophomore
Macie Justice (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) in the final seconds of the period.
Waynesburg closed the second quarter on an 11-0 run with baskets from four different players, including two layups from senior
Clara-Paige Miller (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) and Henkins, who knocked down her second three-pointer of the afternoon to get into double figures.
The run grew to 22-0, as Waynesburg opened the second half with 11-straight points. Henkins drained two more three-pointers, followed by a free throw and layup from junior
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) and a transition layup from senior
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central).
Overall, Waynesburg outscored UPG (1-11) 22-7 in the third, carrying a 62-29 lead into the fourth quarter. The Bobcats never cut the deficit below 30 points over the final 10 minutes of play.
Henkins led Waynesburg in scoring for a second-straight game, finishing with 16 points, 12 of which came on four made three pointers. Justice finished with 11 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc.
Miller, Friday and senior
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) each finished with nine points. Waynesburg hauled in 50 rebounds, led by Mohrbacher's eight, compared to just 31 for the host squad.
The Jackets resume PAC play on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Chatham. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
