WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 31) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team welcomed Thiel to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. The Yellow Jackets downed the Tomcats 85-49 for their third-straight win, which is the longest such streak this season.
The Jackets' (9-10, 5-5) latest win featured their largest margin of victory this winter.
After Thiel (6-13, 1-9) took an early 4-2 lead, Waynesburg scored 12 of the next 14, half of those coming from senior
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central), who was fresh off an 18-point performance on Wednesday at Franciscan that put her above 1,000 collegiate points.
Senior
Aubrey Burns (Kittaning, Pa. / Armstrong) recorded a three-pointer to beat the first quarter buzzer, with the help of a few bounces off the rim that put the home team ahead 19-11 after one quarter.
Burns opened the scoring in the second quarter with another three-ball. The half ended on an 18-4 run from the Yellow Jackets, building their lead to 41-19 at the half. Waynesburg had scoring contributions from nine different players in the first two quarters of play.
Senior
Clara-Paige Miller (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) became the first Yellow Jacket of the game to reach double figures with a 2-for-2 trip to the charity stripe early in the third quarter. Junior
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) reached double-digit points in the same fashion a few minutes later.
Waynesburg grew its lead to 30 by the third quarter's end, setting them on the path to victory.
The Jackets boasted four double-digit scorers in the win, led by Miller's 14. Senior
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) matched Miller with 14. Mohrbacher and junior
Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) posted 10 each to complete the quartet.
Friday enjoyed a short night of work, but was still able to go for eight points, six rebounds, and four steals in just 18 minutes on the court.
Waynesburg dominated the boards, outrebounding the opposition 59-40. Much like the scoring, a slew of Jackets contributed to the work on the glass. Seven different players tallied between five and seven boards. Miller and senior
Liv Ammons (Wadestown, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) led the way with seven each.
Waynesburg's bench outscored Thiel's reserves 43-22 and the Orange and Black dominated the turnover battled by a 22-8 margin.
Waynesburg is next in action this Wednesday at Saint Vincent. Tipoff for the women's game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
