MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 1) – The Waynesburg University softball team opened its run of 10 games in five days at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets won their first game of the trip 14-3 (5 innings) over Massachusetts Maritime Academy, before falling 6-0 to Wilkes in game two.
The Jackets (4-2) earned their fourth-straight win and ended the Buccaneers' (4-2) season-opening four-game winning streak by scoring three runs in the first inning and two more in the second before blowing the game open with a nine-run fourth.
Sophomore
Graeson Grubbs (Volant, Pa. / Wilmington) was the star of the opener. She went 2-for-3 in the contest with two doubles, five RBIs and a run scored. Senior
Braylee Corbin (Petersburg, W.Va. / Petersburg) continued her hot start to the season by going 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and four runs scored.
The Jackets' third double-digit run output was more than enough support for sophomore
Madison Baker (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong), who scored her first win in the circle this year after working 4.0 innings, during which she gave up three runs on 10 hits and no walks. She punched out three Buccaneers before turning the ball over to freshman
Willow Eckles (Scenery Hill, Pa. / Bentworth), who tossed a perfect fifth to close out the victory.
For the first time since the season opener, the Waynesburg offense was kept under control by the Colonels (2-0). Though the Jackets were shut out on the scoreboard, they still boasted some impressive performances with the bats.
Junior
Jamie Kelly (Front Royal, Va. / Skyline) logged three hits in four at-bats. Freshman
Morgan Walt (Hunker, Pa. / Hempfield) added a pair of knocks during four trips to the plate. Sophomore
Rylee Rohbeck (Oakdale, Pa. / South Fayette) reached base three times via walks.
Sophomore
Pressly Meadows (Annapolis, Ohio / Edison) started and took the loss after pitching 4.0 innings. She allowed five runs on six hits and three walks. Freshmen
Emily Pratt (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) and
Emma Wear (Wheeling, W.Va. / Wheeling Park) worked one inning each in relief.
Waynesburg is back on the field tomorrow starting at 10 a.m. against SUNY Delhi. The second game of the day pits Waynesburg against Wilson at noon.
