WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 10) – Senior
Braylee Corbin (Petersburg, W.Va. / Petersburg) had a day to remember as the Waynesburg University softball hosted Mt. Aloysius for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. Corbin teed off on a trio of homeruns in game two against the Mounties, as the Jackets swept the twin bill by the final scores of 8-1 and 9-1 (5 innings).
Corbin's three long balls in one game set a new program record (as of 1991).
The start to game one did not portend the offensive explosion that the Jackets (11-3) put on for the final nine innings of the day. Through three innings, Mt. Aloysius's (0-6) starting pitcher frustrated Waynesburg to the tune of just two base runners via a hit batsman and a walk.
However, things changed drastically in the bottom of the fourth when Corbin led off with a walk. Junior
Jamie Kelly (Front Royal, Va. / Skyline) followed with an RBI double that tied the game at 1-1. After Kelly stole third, sophomore
Meysa Heitmann (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to plate her team's second run of the inning. A double by sophomore
Graeson Grubbs (Voland, Pa. / Wilmington) and another two-bagger from senior
Kassidy Trimble (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) made the score 3-1.
Waynesburg opened the floodgates two innings later with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Kelly singled and scored thanks to an error during an at-bat by Grubbs to extend the Jacket advantage to three (4-1). Two batters later, Trimble singled home Heitmann to make it 5-1. Senior
Madie Cicero (Willowick, Ohio / Eastlake North) broke the game open with a two-run double and forced a pitching change by Mount Aloysius.
The home team scored the opener's final run two batter laters when sophomore
Rylee Rohbeck (Oakdale, Pa. / South Fayette) brought Trimble home with a sacrifice fly.
Those two productive innings were more than enough support for senior
Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University), who improved to 2-0 on the season after logging her first complete game of the year. She scattered five hits, all singles, and two walks to pick up the victory. She struck out two in her most recent appearance.
Six different Jackets logged at least one hit each in an eight-hit performance.
Waynesburg carried its offensive momentum over from game one and wasted no time in taking the lead in the bottom of the first. Corbin tattooed her first of three-record setting homers to lead off the game for the Jackets. Kelly doubled in the ensuing at-bat and was brought home two at-bats later thanks to a single from sophomore
Tori Foust (Blairsville, Pa. / River Valley).
The Waynesburg lead grew to five in the bottom of the second. Freshman
Sydney Fisher (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper St. Clair) drew a leadoff walk and Corbin singled her to third. Kelly got in on the power party with at three-run bomb that made the score 5-0.
After being shut out in the third, Corbin drilled her second homer of the game to up her team's advantage to 6-0. The Mounties got on the board in the top of the fifth, but Waynesburg not only got that run back in the fifth, but was able to walk the game off early.
Freshman
Morgan Walt (Hunker, Pa. / Hempfield) collected a one-out single and was bunted over to second base by freshman
Lorryn Sepe (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn-Trafford). Junior
Kaitlyn Sullivan (Monaca, Pa. / Central Valley) brought Walt in with her first collegiate RBI single. That set the stage for Corbin, who ended the game with walk-off two-run blast to right-center field.
The Jackets' explosive power display overshadowed a fine pitching effort by sophomore
Pressly Meadows (Annapolis, Ohio / Edison), who improved to 4-1 on the season following a five-inning complete game. She took a no-hitter into the top of the fifth, during which she gave up all three of her hits allowed. She walked one and struck out two more in the victory.
Waynesburg is off until Saturday, March 21, when it opens PAC play at Washington & Jefferson. Start time for game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
