WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 14) – The Waynesburg University baseball team was in action on Saturday when it hosted St. John Fisher for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets were swept by the Cardinals by the final scores of 8-3 and 9-0.
St. John Fisher (9-4) never trailed in the opener after a two-run homer in the top of the first. Waynesburg (7-7) answered the challenge with a run in the second. Freshman
Mason Leonard (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) cut his team's deficit down to 2-1 with an RBI groundout that brought in junior
Trent Giraffa (Hanover, Pa. / DeLone Catholic).
The Cardinals fired back in the top of the third with their second homer of the day, this one of the three-run variety, to go up 5-1. Again, the Jackets were ready with an answer, as Giraffa singled in graduate student
Gavin Pratt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels).
The score became 6-2 with a St. John tally in the top of the fourth, but Waynesburg wouldn't go away. Once again, Giraffa did the dirty work, this time hitting into a fielder's choice for his second RBI of the contest. Senior
Jordan Mosley (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) sprinted home on the play to once again pull within three of the opposition.
Unfortunately, Waynesburg was unable to scratch out any more runs during game one, while the Cardinals posted a score in the eighth and one more in the ninth to bring about the final score.
Senior
Ethan Erhard (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) got the start on the mound and suffered the loss after giving up five runs on four hits and four walks. He tied for the game lead with three strikeouts.
Giraffa paced the Jacket offense by going 3-for-4 two RBIs and a run scored.
Game two was centered on pitching and defense. Junior
Alex Nicholson (Cortland, Ohio / Mathews) got Waynesburg off on the right foot by starting and allowing just one run on two hits and two walks over three innings of work before turning mound duties over to senior
Zach Scibelli (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna). Scibelli tossed a scoreless fourth.
Unfortunately, St. John Fisher broke the game open in the fifth with six runs to put the contest out of reach. The victors added a tally in the sixth and one more in the seventh to close out the sweep.
Senior
Noah Gabriel (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) went two-for-two in the late contest to pace the Jacket offense.
Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, March 18, when it plays its first true roads game of the season. The Jackets face Penn State Altoona for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
