WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 26) – The Waynesburg University softball team stepped out of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on a windy Thursday for a home doubleheader against Pitt Greensburg. The Yellow Jackets bounced back from a 10-0 loss in game one to stage a seventh inning rally that resulted in a 5-4 walk-off victory in game two.
The Bobcats (3-11) scored the game-winning run in the top of the first inning. They added five in the second and four more in the fifth.
Waynesburg (15-5) suffered the loss despite only being outhit by a 9-7 margin. Sophomore
Meysa Heitmann (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) continued her torrid hitting by going 3-for-3 with a double and two stolen bases to lead the offense. Game one marked her ninth-straight with a hit and her fifth-straight with multiple knocks.
Senior
Kassidy Trimble (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) went two-for-two at the dish.
The home team got on the board first in game two when junior
Jamie Kelly (Front Royal, Va. / Skyline) produced an RBI groundout that allowed Heitmann to score.
The lead didn't last long, as the Bobcats tied the game in the second and took control of the contest with a three spot in the fifth. After a scoreless sixth, the Jackets were down to their final three outs in a 4-1 game heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Junior
Brynn Charnesky (Scottdale, Pa. / Southmoreland) and freshman
Morgan Walt (Hunker, Pa. / Hempfield) drew back-to-back one-out walks to put two on for Heitmann. The second-year standout came through yet again for her team, this time roping an RBI double to make the score 4-2.
The Jackets took advantage of a gift from Pitt Greensburg as ball four to senior
Braylee Corbin (Petersburg, W.Va. / Petersburg) reached the backstop. Not only did Corbin advance to second, but Heitmann sprinted to third and Walt crossed home plate cutting the deficit to just one.
The next batter, sophomore
Rylee Rohbeck (Oakdale, Pa. / South Fayette) took full advantage of her chance to play hero by tying the game up with an RBI single. That knock turned out to be the game-winning play, as a throwing error from the outfield allowed Corbin to score the walk-off run.
Corbin bounced back from a quiet game one by going 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Heitmann ran her hitting streak to 10 games and her multi-hit streak to six with a 2-for-4 showing that included a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Rohbeck also logged multiple hits and drove in a run.
Walt quietly put together one of the top pitching performances of the season to improve to 2-0 in the circle. She allowed no earned runs on just four singles and three walks. She added seven strikeouts to a complete game performance.
The Jackets return to PAC competition on Saturday, when they host Grove City for a senior day doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
