Baseball does it all in doubleheader sweep of Pitt Greensburg

Explosive hitting and outstanding starting pitching lead Jackets past Bobcats

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 30) – The Waynesburg University baseball team took a break from Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Monday by hosting Pitt Greensburg for a seven-inning doubleheader. The Yellow Jacket bats exploded for a combined 29 run as they swept the Bobcats by the final scores of 17-1 and 12-1.

The 17 runs scored in game one were the most by Waynesburg (10-14) since scoring 23 against these same Bobcats (4-13) last year.

The Jackets scored all the runs they needed by posting four in the bottom of the first of the opener. A single and an error during the at-bat sophomore Kaden Flambard (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) gave him three RBIs and made the score 4-0.

The Bobcats scored their only run of game one in the second, but the home team made that up thanks to a sacrifice fly RBI by junior Hunter Mamie (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold).

The victors put the game well out of reach with six runs in the fifth and the game's final run in the sixth.

Flambard had easily his best game of the season at the plate by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Weston Winchester (Tuckasegee, N.C. / Smoky Mountain) singled, walked twice and scored twice.

Speaking of walks, The Jackets patiently drew eight of them from Pitt Greensburg pitchers to go along with 10 base hits.

All of those base runners came in support of senior pitcher Zach Scibelli (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna), who logged a complete-game start en route to his first win of the season. He scattered five hits, four of which were singles, and two walks, while logging five strikeouts.

Waynesburg didn't let off the gas in game two, as it scored five of six innings in which it came to the plate. The Jackets got all the offense it needed in the first, as freshman Eli Boring (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) tripled in classmate Mason Leonard (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe), before scoring himself on a wild pitch.

The Jackets added three runs in the second, four in the third, three in the fourth and five in the fifth to make things easy for senior pitcher Dalton Lucey (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene). Lucey improved to 2-1 on the year after allowing six hits, five of which were singles, and no walks while striking out seven.

Senior Hunter Hamilton (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene), freshman Jose Lopez, Jr. (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy Orange) and Mamie posted two hits each in the late contest. Mamie recorded a game-high three RBI's.

Perhaps the biggest offensive highlight of the day was freshman Luke Buckner (Charleston, W.Va. / St. Albans) collecting his first collegiate homerun, which was a two-run shot in the fifth.

Waynesburg doubled up the Bobcats in hits (12-6) and benefited from 10 free bases on four walks and six hit batsmen.

The Jackets get back to PAC competition on Thursday when they travel to Grove City for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
