WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 14) – The Waynesburg University baseball team battled one of the top teams in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), as well as the weather, when Westminster came town for a doubleheader on Tuesday. The Titans swept the twin-bill by the final scores of 11-0 and 6-1. The late game was ended in the sixth inning due to a second weather delay.
Game one started as a pitchers duel, as junior
Alex Nicholson (Cortland, Ohio / Mathews) matched his mound opponent pitch for pitch over three scoreless innings of one-hit ball. Unfortunately, the Westminster (20-8, 11-3) bats broke through in the top of the fourth with five runs.
The visiting team added three runs in the fifth, one in the eighth and two final tallies in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Freshman
Brayden Krebs (York, Pa. / Susquehannock) and sophomore
Bryce Meyer (New Market, Md. / Linganore) were the two biggest bright spots of game one for the Yellow Jackets (11-21, 2-12). Krebs went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Meyer logged two scoreless innings of relief with just one hit given up.
Game two got off to a similar start as the opener with senior pitcher
Ethan Erhard (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) tossing two perfect innings in his latest start. He was lifted prior to the third inning, when Westminster scored four runs to take control of the contest.
The Titans led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, when Waynesburg broke up the shutout thanks to an RBI single by freshman
Mason Leonard (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) that plated freshman
Brody McMillan (Griffin, Ga. / North Henderson).
The Jackets return to action on Saturday, April 18, when they celebrate senior day. First pitch of the PAC doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
