WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 18) – The Waynesburg University baseball team recognized its eight senior honorees prior to Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets were defeated by the Terriers by the final scores of 8-3 and 6-4.
Waynesburg (11-23, 2-14) found itself behind the eight ball early after Hiram (12-18, 9-7) scored five runs in the top of the first inning in game one. The visitors tacked on two more in the top of the fourth to move ahead 7-0.
The Jackets broke up the shutout in the fourth when junior
Ian Trott (Clairton, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) brought home senior
Hunter Hamilton (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene) with an RBI groundout. Hiram got the run back in the top of the seventh, before the home team attempted to rally in the seventh.
Freshman
Eli Boring (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) connected on an RBI single that plated senior
Mason Leonard (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) and made the score 8-2. Two batters later, freshman
Brody McMillan (Griffin, Ga. / North Henderson) came through with a two-out run-scoring base knock that allowed freshman Brayden Krebbs (York, Pa. / Susquehannock) to cut the deficit to 8-3.
The Jackets were able to put runners on base in both the eighth and ninth frames, but were unable to push any more runs across home plate.
Hamilton led Waynesburg at the plate by going three-for-three with two walks and a run scored. Krebs, Leonard and sophomore
Kaden Flambard (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) logged two hits each in game one.
Senior
Ethan Erhard (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) got the start and worked five innings on the mound. Classmates
Hudson Pincavitch (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) and
Nolan Dunn (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Carrick) were solid out of the bullpen, combining for four innings, during which they gave up just one unearned run.
Game two got off to a much better start for Waynesburg, when Hamilton lifted a sacrifice fly into first base foul territory in the first inning that allowed Krebbs to sprint home and give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
Hiram tied the game in the top of the second, but the edge went right back to the host squad thanks an RBI double by Flambard in the bottom of the frame. Once again, the Terriers tied the score, this time with a tally in the top of the third. But again, the Jackets had an answer. Trott put his team back ahead in the bottom of the inning when he doubled in Hamilton.
Hiram countered the Waynesburg challenge again with a tally in the fourth and took its first lead of the game (4-3) in the top of the fifth. Momentum swung back to the Jackets in the bottom of the inning when Trott logged his second RBI double in a row, this one scoring Boring.
Unfortunately, that was the final Jacket run of the day. Meanwhile, Hiram took the lead for good in the top of the sixth and added an insurance run in the ninth.
Krebbs and Trott led the Waynesburg offense in game two by both going 2-for-4 at the dish.
Senior
Dalton Lucey (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) allowed four runs over 5.0 innings of work. He tallied four strikeouts during a no-decision.
Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, April 22, when it travels to Pittsburgh to face Chatham for a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
