PITTSBURGH, Pa. (April 22) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Pittsburgh on Wednesday to face Chatham in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets were swept by the final scores of 8-5 and 17-2 (7 innings).
Game one got off to a strong start for the Jackets (11-25, 2-16), who opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when junior
Ian Trott (Clairton, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) doubled in senior
Hunter Hamilton (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene). Chatham (24-10, 10-8) answered the visiting team's challenge with a two spot in the bottom of the frame to go up 2-1.
The Waynesburg offense broke out in the top of the third for four runs and a 5-2 advantage. Freshman
Brayden Krebs (York, Pa. / Susquehannock) led off, reached via error and scored two batters later thanks to an RBI double by Hamilton. Two batters later, Hamilton scored his second run of the opener thanks to an RBI single by freshman
Brody McMillan (Griffin, Ga. / North Henderson) to put the Orange and Black back ahead by one run (3-2).
Senior
Noah Gabriel (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) kept the inning going with a single and was followed by sophomore
Kaden Flambard (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park), who slipped a single down the right field line to plate McMillan. Run number four of the inning came courtesy of freshman
Mason Leonard (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe), who brought home Gabriel with Waynesburg's fourth-straight one-bagger.
Chatham scored a run in the fourth and another in the sixth, but still trailed 5-4 going into the seventh inning. The seventh-inning stretch apparently was just what the homestanding Cougars needed, as they plated four runs in the bottom of the frame to bring up the eventual final tally.
Waynesburg out-hit Chatham 11-to-7 in the opener, with Trott collecting three of those base knocks. McMillan, Gabriel and Leonard add two hits each to the total.
Five different Jacket pitchers toed the rubber in the defeat, including sophomore
Nick Manko (Upper St. Clair, Pa. / Upper St. Clair) and freshman
Austan Runtas (Slippery Rock, Pa. / Slippery Rock), who worked an inning each with no earned runs allowed.
Chatham roared out of the gate in game two by scoring 10 runs in the first inning on its way to the win. Trott tripled in the late contest, while junior
Jordan Mosley (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) picked up an RBI. Junior
Zander Allen (Hebron, Ky. / Conner) and freshman
Jake Schultz (West Chester, Pa. / B Reed Henderson) each logged an inning of work out of the bullpen without giving up an earned run. Sophomore
Aydan Adamson (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) logged a pair of scoreless relief innings.
Waynesburg is back on the road on Saturday, April 25, when it heads to Beaver Falls, Pa. to face Geneva in a conference twin bill. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
