WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 7) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Franciscan on a cold, sunny Tuesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets took care of business and picked up two crucial wins by the final scores of 6-1 and 10-1 (5 innings).
Waynesburg (18-8, 6-4) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single by junior
Brynn Charnesky (Scottdale, Pa. / Southmoreland) that scored sophomore
Tori Foust (Blairsville, Pa. / River Valley). The home team added the winning run and its first two insurance scores in the second. Junior
Jamie Kelly (Front Royal, Va. / Skyline) doubled home sophomore
Meysa Heitmann (Morgantown, W.Va. / University), before coming around to score on a Foust single. Waynesburg made the score 4-1 when senior
Kassidy Trimble (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) drove in Foust with a single and an error.
Franciscan (3-15, 1-7) got on the board with a tally in the top of the fourth, but the Orange and Black answered right back with two in the bottom of the frame. Charnesky made the score 5-1 when she scored on an error and Kelly followed in the next at-bat with an RBI double.
Waynesburg outhit Franciscan 11-4 in the opener and provided plenty of support for freshman
Morgan Walt (Hunker, Pa. / Hempfield), who improved to 3-0 in the circle with a complete-game effort. She scattered four singles and three walks to pick up the victory.
Kelly was unstoppable at the plate in the opener, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Heitmann, Foust and Charnesky added two hits each to the winning effort.
The Jackets scored early and often in the late contest. They scored twice in the first, twice in the second and twice in the third to take a 6-0 lead. Once again, Franciscan pushed a run across home plate in the fourth, but Waynesburg got it right back with a tally in the bottom of the frame.
The Jackets were able to end the game early in the bottom of the fifth thanks to Kelly, who blasted a three-run walk-off homer to bring about the final score.
It was her fourth of the season, which moved her into fourth place in the PAC standings. It was Waynesburg's conference-leading 13
th long ball of the campaign.
The Jackets once again logged 11 hits and Kelly posted her second-straight 3-for-3 showing at the dish. The slugging infielder racked up four RBIs and scored two more. Charnesky added a 2-for-2 performance with two RBIs and a run scored, while Rohbeck also plated a pair.
Freshman
Emily Pratt (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) bumped her record up to 3-2 in the circle after allowing the one earned run on six hits and no walks.
Waynesburg is back in action on Thursday, with another home PAC doubleheader, this one against Bethany. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
