WAYNESBURG, Pa. (July 24) – Waynesburg University Director of Athletics and Head Men's Basketball Coach Tim Fusina is pleased to announce the promotion of Korey Mitchum from graduate assistant to assistant coach effective immediately. The move is just the latest step in Mitchum's three-plus-year journey with the Yellow Jackets.
 
"Elevating Korey to the full-time assistant slot on our staff is a no-brainer," Fusina said. "Korey has invested a lot of himself into our program and University. He has grown so much as a coach and person in his time here as a student-athlete and as a graduate assistant coach. I believe he has a bright future in this profession because he is passionate, personable and always willing to learn."
 
Prior to spending last season as a graduate assistant on Fusina's staff, Mitchum spent two years as a guard for the Jackets. Over that time, he started 26 of the 51 games in which he appeared, including all 25 contests that made up the 2024-25 campaign. That year, he led the team in total assists (56), assists per game (2.2) and steals per game (2.5), while logging the third-most minutes per game (28.9) and posting the third-best free throw percentage (.744).
 
Before beginning his time at Waynesburg, Mitchum spent two years at Garrett College. He started all 31 games of the 2022-23 season. Before earning his spot as a regular starter for the Lakers, Mitchum was part of the 2018-19 Allegany College of Maryland team that qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament. He appeared in all 26 games that season for the Trojans.
 
He was also an All-AMAC performer at Southern Garrett High School in Oakland, Maryland.
 
Mitchum graduated from Waynesburg with his undergraduate degree in Sports Management and added his MBA from Waynesburg in 2025.
 
"Korey is a hard worker. He worked hard as a student to obtain his degree, he worked hard as an athlete and helped us win. I have no doubt he will continue to work hard as a coach," Fusina said. "On top of all of this, he is a great person who I am proud to have coached and now proud of to work with. He will do great things here."
 
After posting multiple stops on his basketball journey, Mitchum has found a place to grow and develop as a coach in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse and is highly motivated to give back to the school and its athletes.
 
"Waynesburg is home for me," Mitchum said. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to work for a man (Fusina) that I respect and a program that I love."
 
Heading into the 2026-27 campaign, Mitchum will be joined by a former teammate and pupil of his in graduate assistant Scott Bilovus. Bilovus was recently added to the team's staff as a graduate assistant earlier this summer.
 
"Korey's strongest attribute is his ability to connect with our recruits and our student-athletes," Fusina said. "He has the right personality to be demanding, but positive and has given recruits his perspective as a former athlete in our program and a student at our University. He has a great foundation and is only going to get better. We are lucky to have him taking on this role."
