WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Aug. 24) – The Waynesburg University Department of Athletics is excited to announce the hiring of Tyler Rubasky as its new head baseball coach. Rubasky is no stranger to the Yellow Jackets, as he was a proud member of the team from 2012 to 2016.
 
"Waynesburg is my alma mater. It is a place that I hold very near and dear to my heart," Rubasky said. "I stepped foot on campus as a 17-year-old high school student and fell in love with the campus and the people and had an incredible four years here as a student-athlete. It was very easy for me to want to apply and have the opportunity to come back home."
 
Rubasky's enthusiasm to return to Southwestern Pa. was evident to Waynesburg Director of Athletics and Head Basketball Coach Tim Fusina.
 
"Tyler's excitement about the position came through during the interview process. He and I spoke at length about his plan to change our program's path by establishing a recruiting foundation in the area to attract top local talent," Fusina said. "His vision for the program was something that aligned with our department's values and we are happy to have him back at Waynesburg."
 
Rubasky, a native of Hazleton, Pa., was a steady, productive catcher for the Jackets. After flashing his potential by hitting .375 over 11 games as a sophomore, he became a regular in Waynesburg's two-catcher rotation over his junior and season campaigns. He started 22-of-23 games in both of those seasons and hit .284 over that same time period.
 
Rubasky began his coaching career with the Yellow Jackets as an assistant coach for the 2017 and 2018 seasons, before moving on to an assistant position at Franklin (Ind.) College in 2019. He made the move up to the Division II ranks when he became top assistant coach at Davis & Elkins (W.Va.). Following two years with D&E, Rubasky returned to Division III when he was tabbed as the top assistant at Trine (Ind.) in 2023.
 
After two years with the Thunder, he stayed in the Hoosier State and became the top assistant coach at Anderson University, where he made a noticeable impact in the program's recruiting by helping put together a 17-man class that included 15 freshmen and two transfers.
 
His dedication to the Ravens was rewarded prior to the 2026 campaign when he was named head coach. Rubasky responded to Anderson's faith in him by leading the Orange and Black to a 22-20-1 record that included a 12-10 mark in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, which qualified them for the HCAC tournament.
 
"A very wise man and mentor to me, [Franklin Head Baseball Coach] Lance Marshall, once told me that you are never truly ready to be a head coach. You can be prepared and organized, and he could teach me everything he knows, but until you are in that position, you will never be ready," Rubasky said. "My time as the head coach at Anderson gave me that opportunity to know, without a doubt, that I am prepared and ready for this position as the head coach at Waynesburg."
 
Rubasky's deep commitment to the Yellow Jacket program, rapid maturation as a coach and tangible program-building skills have Fusina and the rest of the Department of Athletics eager to welcome one of its own back to campus.
 
"Tyler is passionate, organized and determined to rebuild our baseball program," Fusina said. "I am sure he will be a positive leader that our student-athletes need."
 
Even after having time to react to his hiring, Rubasky still wasn't able to full process achieving such a personal goal.
 
"I am not sure I can put into words the excitement I had when I realized," Rubasky said. "When I decided I wanted to follow the dream of coaching college baseball as a career, Matthew Bensinger, a former college teammate of mine, and I used to talk about how awesome it would be if one day I was the head coach here at Waynesburg. What seemed like big dreams and something that would never happen as a 19 or 20-year-old college kid has happened and I could not be more excited and honored to be the next head baseball coach at Waynesburg."
 
Rubasky knows he didn't make this journey alone.
 
"I would like to thank President Lee, Coach Fusina and the rest of the search committee for believing in me to be the coach to lead this program. I would also like to thank the coaches I have worked for in the past and the coaches I have worked with for helping shape me into the coach I am today," Rubasky said. "I am honored to be the next head coach at Waynesburg and cannot wait to get to work."
