Jackets host Ursinus in non-PAC gridiron contest

Polynice's 84-yard interception return for a score highlights Waynesburg's day

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 12) – The Waynesburg University football team played host to Ursinus in a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest on Saturday. The Bears never trailed as they took the meeting 46-10.

Ursinus (2-0) scored the first two touchdowns of the game to take a 13-0 lead just over eight minutes into the game. Senior kicker Drew Pinkerton (Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg) got Waynesburg (0-2) on the board with 2:08 left to play in the opening quarter by knocking down a 33-yard field goal.

The Bears answered by scoring 16 points to surge ahead 29-3 with just under three minutes left to play in the first half. The Jackets desperately needed a boost with the break looming. Thankfully, senior Joanes Polynice (Winter Garden, Fla. / West Orange) was able to provide that boost when he stepped in front of a pass, ripped it away from the intended receiver and raced 84 yards for his team's first touchdown of the day.

Ursinus went into the locker room leading 29-10 and only added to its lead with two touchdowns and a field goal over the final 30 minutes to bring about the final score.

For a second-straight week, junior wide receiver Isaiah Fields (Cumberland, Md. / Allegany) set a game high for catches, this time snaring five of them for 43 yards. Three different Waynesburg quarterbacks went behind center on the day, including freshman Jaylen Bester (Atlanta, Ga. / Greenville Christian), who flashed his athletic ability by rushing three times for 24 yards.

Polynice tied for the game lead with seven touchdowns to go along with his electrifying scoring play. Junior Vinnie Heller (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) added his first collegiate pick, while also forcing a fumble, recording five tackles and breaking up a pass.

The Jackets play their first game of the year outside of Waynesburg on Saturday, Sept. 19, when they travel to fellow Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) member Allegheny, in a non-league showdown. Kickoff from Meadville is scheduled for 7 p.m.
