EBENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 12) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team continued its strong start to the season with a 6-1 victory over Mount Aloysius on Saturday afternoon at the Ebensburg Tennis Center. The Yellow Jackets earned wins in five of six singles matches and captured the doubles point to secure the road victory.
Waynesburg (3-1) set the tone early by claiming the doubles point. Senior
Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) teamed with sophomore
Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) to pick up a 6-2 win at the No. 2 flight. Junior
Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and freshman
Gabby Peiritsh won by the same score at the third spot.
In singles competition, Waynesburg showcased its depth with victories from five different players. Sophomore
Celeste Matsaudza (Boksburg, South Africa / St. Dominic's Catholic School) earned a win at No. 2 singles, while Stephens posted an impressive 7-5, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 position. Umshares, Peiritsh, and senior
Karly Starcher (Williamstown, W.Va. / St. Mary's) added wins in the fourth, fifth, and sixth flights, respectively.
The Jackets will look to carry its positive momentum into Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, which opens at Grove City on Saturday, Sept. 19. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
