WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 30) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team hosted Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday night for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup at John F. Wiley Stadium. The Yellow Jackets put forth a strong all-around effort, particularly in the second half, to score a 2-0 victory.
The Presidents (3-6, 1-3) didn't make it easy on the Jackets (6-4, 4-1), as they put six shots on goal during the first half. Luckily, senior Lex Greenlief (Chester, W.Va. / Oak Glen) showcased the skills that allowed her to earn first-team All-PAC status last year and kept the game scoreless heading into halftime.
Momentum shifted to the home team's favor over the final 45 minutes, as the Jackets outshot the opposition by a 10-4 margin. One of those shots came in the 53rd minutes when junior Abby Ngugi (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) unleashed a bomb from nearly 60 yards out on a free kick that bounced once and found the back of the net to put Waynesburg ahead 1-0.
Junior Amanda Pepe (Mantua, N.J. / Gloucester County Institute of Technology) doubled her team's advantage less than a minute later when she took a feed from senior Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) and found the back of the net to bring about the final score of 2-0.
The Jackets outshot W&J 19-13 on the night and held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Greenlief stopped all seven shots on goal she faced for her fourth shutout of the season. It was her third clean sheet in Waynesburg's last four games.
The Jackets are back at John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday when they host Hiram for another PAC contest. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
