Waynesburg Captures 1966 National Championship
Waynesburg won the 1966 NAIA National Championship with an 11-0 record under first-year coach Carl DePasqua. The Jackets defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater, 42-21, at Tulsa's Skelly Stadium, as running back Rich Dahar rushed for 233 yards on 41 carries. The team reached the title game after a thrilling win over New Mexico Highlands, as Dahar threw a halfback pass to Bob Miltenberger with 14 seconds remaining.
Waynesburg won five games during the season in the waning moments, including two botched extra points committed by Findlay and Westminster. Waynesburg improved its record to 7-0 with a 13-7 win over West Virginia Wesleyan. Huntey drove the Jackets 87-yards in 44 seconds, capped off by a 15-yard touchdown pass to Herrmann with 46 seconds left.
The undefeated season was a pleasant surprise for Waynesburg, which was named the Small College Team of the Year by the Washington (D.C.) Touchdown Club. Freshmen quarterbacks Don Paull and John Huntey led the team throwing to wide receiver Don Herrmann, who went on to play six seasons in the NFL with the New York Giants. DePasqua left Waynesburg a year later as an assistant for the Pittsburgh Steelers and later as head coach of the University of Pittsburgh in 1969.
