From "Pig Fight" to ...

The Inaugural 1895 Season of Waynesburg Football

The 2006 Waynesburg football team played the 104th season in the program's 111-year history. The winning tradition stems from wins over teams from West Virginia University and Washington & Jefferson College in 1895. Over the years, the Yellow Jacket program has grown significantly, winning 10 conference championships and a national championship in 1966.

The Yellow Jackets all-time record of 407-387-38 includes a 2-0 record against Penn State University in 1931 and 1932. Waynesburg maintains its current series with long-time rivals Washington & Jefferson (1897), Bethany (1899), Grove City (1903), Westminster (1910) and Thiel (1913) as a member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) since 1990. The Yellow Jackets will renew their rivalry with Geneva (1908) and Saint Vincent (1929) this season, as both teams are provisional members of the PAC.

The first game in school history was played when Waynesburg traveled to WVU. Jesse H. Hazlett scored the first touchdown in Waynesburg College history to lead the Jackets to a 10-0 win over the Mountaineers.

Waynesburg played its first home game at the Greene County Fair Grounds on Thanksgiving Day when the team defeated a junior varsity squad from W&J, 4-0. The Waynesburg Messenger described the game in the Dec. 4, 1895 issue as "a pig-fight in a hog-wallow," while spectators struggled to understand the rules of the game.

Now the Jackets host their games at the 4,000-seat John F. Wiley Stadium, which was built in 1999 and named for the team's former head coach of 1951-1954.
