A Timeline of Waynesburg Football since 1895

The 2007 Waynesburg football team played the 105th season in the program’s 112-year history. The Yellow Jacket program has grown significantly over the years, winning 10 conference championships and a national championship in 1966.

Waynesburg's all-time record of 415-390-38 includes its current series with long-time rivals Washington & Jefferson (1897), Bethany (1899), Grove City (1903), Westminster (1910) and Thiel (1913) as a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference since 1990. The Yellow Jackets renewed rivalries with Geneva (1908) and Saint Vincent (1929) in 2007 as both teams are provisional members of the PAC. Waynesburg started a new rivalry in recent years with Thomas More (1992), as the Saints joined the PAC in 2005.

1895 – First game in school history played against club team from West Virginia University … Jesse Hazelett scores first touchdown in team history to lead Jackets to 10-0 win over the Mountaineers … Waynesburg plays first home game at Greene County Fair Grounds against a junior varsity team from Washington & Jefferson on Thanksgiving Day. The Waynesburg Messenger describes the game in the Dec. 4, 1895 issue as "a pig-fight in a hog-wallow," while spectators struggle to understand the rules of the game.

1921 – Play resumes after four-year lapse during World War I … Frank N. Wolf, the school’s all-time winningest coach, records first win (21-0, California State, Oct. 18).

1924 – As first-year member of Tri-State Conference, Waynesburg (7-2-1) wins first title.

1929 – Waynesburg plays first night game in Pittsburgh city history, losing to Duquesne.

1931 – Jackets upset Penn State, 7-0, as Rab Currie scores lone touchdown.

1932 – Waynesburg edges Penn State, 7-6, on Oct. 8, completing 2-0 record all-time vs. the Nittany Lions … Jackets (8-1) win Tri-State title with 6-3 win over Geneva on Nov. 11.

1934 – Jackets (5-4) win third and final Tri-State title; leaves conference in 1937.

1936 – Waynesburg records 100th win in team history.

1939 - Television history made as Waynesburg visits Randalls Island, N.Y., on Sept. 30, to play first televised football game against national-power Fordham University at Tri-borough Stadium. … NBC televised the game with two cameras; announcer Bill Stern made historic call … Fordham won the game, 34-7 … Waynesburg’s Bobby Brooks scores first touchdown in televised football history on a 63-yard run.

1941 – Associated Press names tackle Nick George First Team All-America … Wolf finishes coaching career with record of 65-63-10 – most wins in team history.

1946 – Play resumes after a three-year lapse for World War II.

1949 – Randolph-Macon plays Jackets in the first home night game in school history.

1958 – Waynesburg joins NAIA’s West Penn Conference.

1963 – Coach Mo Scarry, who was later inducted to NAIA Football Hall of Fame, leads team to 6-2 record; shares first West Penn title.

1964 – Waynesburg records 200th win in team history … Harry Theofiledes, ranked second in nation with 2,107 total yards, amasses 479 yards against Grove City.

1965 – Jackets (6-2-1) win first outright West Penn title … Theofiledes ends career with 4,402 yards, 5,380 total yards.

1966 – Waynesburg (11-0) wins NAIA National Championship, defeating Wisconsin-Whitewater, 42-21, at Tulsa University’s Skelly Stadium in Tulsa, Okla. … Rich Dahar breaks NAIA Champion Bowl record, rushing for 233 yards, and later named First Team All-America … Coach Carl DePasqua received several Coach of the Year honors … Touchdown Club of Washington, D.C., names Waynesburg top small college team in nation.

1967 – 81-0 win over Frostburg State sets four school records: largest win margin, most points, total offense in game (621) and rushing yards in game (435) … Jackets’ school-record 18-game win streak snapped after 7-0 loss to Fairmont State.

1968 – Waynesburg wins fifth and final title before West Penn Conference folds in 1969 … Quarterback John Huntey and receiver Don Herrmann connect for eight current individual school records in 69-0 win over Lock Haven. Huntey threw 467 passing yards, eight touchdowns, seven of which to Herrmann, who set records for touchdowns, scoring (42), receiving yards (328) and receptions (18).

1970 – Team sets school-record 10th-consecutive winning season at 5-4; streak snapped in 1971.

1983 – Team records 300th win.

1990 – Waynesburg joins Presidents’ Athletic Conference of NCAA Division III.

1995 – Team celebrates 100-year anniversary.

1997 – New field house built honoring Frank N. Wolf.

1998 – After upsetting Grove City at home, 33-13, team clinches first PAC title … Waynesburg loses to Washington & Jefferson a week later, 26-14, as the three teams
split championship.

1999 – New 4,000-seat stadium built, named for former player, coach and trustee John F. "Jack" Wiley ... Running back Mike Stout finishes career as the career leader in all-purpose yards (5,163).

2002 – Team celebrates 100th season in 107-year history … Quarterback Jeff Dumm sets two single-season school records - total offense (2,629) and pass attempts (347).

2003 – Waynesburg wins first-ever outright PAC championship––its first overall outright conference title since 1968 ... Team's 9-1 regular season record ties a school record for most wins in a season ... Yellow Jackets advance to the NCAA Division III Playoffs for first time in school history, before losing to Bridgewater (Va.), 28-24.

2004 – Yellow Jackets qualify for post-season play in back-to-back seasons for first time in school history with bid to ECAC Southeast Championship game, before losing to Johns Hopkins, 26-23 ... Dumm sets two single-season school records and five career records, including passing yards (7,403) and touchdown passes (64) ... Waynesburg amasses a single-season school record of 2,592 passing yards and 4,579 total yards of offense.

2005 – Team records 400th win ... Receiver Dominick Hunter sets school record with 179 career receptions ... Ivan Hawkins finishes career as the all-time leading receiver with 2,439 receiving yards.

2006 – Running back Ryan Abels finishes career as the school’s all-time leading rusher with 3,985 yards and all-time leading scorer (278) ... Kicker Ben Popson sets career record with 34 field goals ... FieldTurf installed at Wiley Stadium for start of the season.

2007 – Waynesburg earns berth to ECAC playoff game for second time in four years, before losing at Dickinson in overtime, 16-10 ... Defensive end Mike Czerwien sets an all-division NCAA career record with 53.5 sacks ... Czerwien became first player in school history to play in the Aztec Bowl and be chosen as an All-American by the AP, AFCA and D3football.com ... Running back Robert Heller sets an all-division NCAA freshman record with 2,176 rushing yards ... Heller set a combined nine single-game and single-season records ... Waynesburg amasses a single-season school record with 2,754 rushing yards.
