Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets

Dr. Chris Davis

Dr. Chris Davis joined the athletic department as Director of Esports in January 2024.

Davis led the Yellow Jacket esports program to a breakout 2024-25 campaign that featured two National Esports Collegiate Conference national championships. Waynesburg claimed the NECC Division IX national title in Overwatch and the NECC Division V national championship in Rocket League. Both squads captured NECC Conference championships along the way.

Waynesburg esports won a record 93 matches across four different titles in 2024-25. Beyond the results in-game, the program added Fortnite to Waynesburg’s offerings and will expand to include Marvel Rivals on PC and Madden, EA College Football, MLB The Show, NBA 2K, NHL, EA FC, Street Fighter, Tekken, and Mario Kart on console starting in fall 2025.

Davis secured a partnership with The Esport Company to stream Waynesburg esports matches and host Pennsylvania high school championships events at Waynesburg’s Esports Arena. The Yellow Jackets hosted high school conference championships in December 2024 and April 2025 and are in contention to host a state championship in the future.

Prior to coming to Waynesburg, Dr. Davis had a 22-year long career in the information technology field most recently serving as Director of Information Technology at Franciscan University for almost four years. He has also served as Chief Information Officer for Virginia Wesleyan University and Lourdes University, and Vice President for Information Systems and Technology at the University of Central Arkansas. He has also held positions as Director of Educational Technology for Plum Borough School District, Director of the Educational Technology Center at Robert Morris University, Application Specialist for Duquesne University, and High School Social Studies Teacher for Spring Grove Area School District.

While at Virginia Wesleyan, Dr. Davis founded the university’s esports program in 2018. He was responsible for the design and building of the arena, equipment selection, game selection, player recruitment, and coaching the Rocket League and Overwatch teams. During his time there, the Virginia Wesleyan esports team enjoyed sustained growth, success, and competed in both the NACE and ECAC esports leagues.

"Dr. Davis has a very impressive resume and can relate to young adults and connect with them in many ways," said Tim Fusina, Waynesburg Director of Athletics. "I believe the many experiences and roles he has held on college campuses will allow his players to develop as students, athletes and people…He began a program from scratch and with the success our young program has had over the past two years and the resources we currently have, I am confident Chris can recruit quality people to our esports program and build a tradition of success.”

Dr. Davis earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Instructional Management and Leadership from Robert Morris University in 2011, a Master of Science in Instructional Technology from Duquesne University in 2006, and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology both from Clarion University in 2000.
