A member of two Waynesburg conference championship teams, Chay Lahew enters his seventh season with the Yellow Jacket coaching staff in 2007. Along the offensive line, he will specialize in the coaching of the guards and centers this season.
Last season the Yellow Jackets ranked third in the nation in fewest sacks allowed (0.6 sacks per game). Waynesburg held its opponents without a sack in six of the last seven games. The unit also paved the way for a 1,500-plus yard running attack.
Despite four different starting combinations in 2005, the Yellow Jacket offensive line paved the way for a 1,000-yard rusher in Ryan Abels, while also limiting opponents to a conference-best eight sacks in 10 games.
Lahew was an all-conference tackle in 1998 when Waynesburg was a tri-champion in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC). Five years later in 2003, he served as offensive line coach of the first-ever outright PAC champion Yellow Jackets.
Since joining the coaching ranks, he has now made it a habit of producing all-conference linemen for Waynesburg. In the last four seasons, Lahew has coached All-Americans Jim Hyland and Craig Petrus, a two-time all-region selection.
In both 2003 and 2004, all five of the Yellow Jacket starting offensive linemen earned recognition from the conference. On the field in 2004, right guard Andy Palko set a school record by starting in 41-straight games during his career.
Lahew, a native of Smithsburgh, Md., resides with his wife, Michelle, in Waynesburg and their daughter, Bryn.
