After four years with the Yellow Jacket football team as a quarterback and an all-purpose h-back, Chris Smithley enters his third season with the Waynesburg coaching staff. This fall marks his first season as the team's academic coordinator. He will also work with the defensive line after spending two seasons as a graduate assistant working with defensive backs.

Smithley spent his first two seasons with Waynesburg as a quarterback before being moved to a fullback/h-back slot in the backfield prior to this junior year.

The Bolivar, Pa. native combined to throw for five touchdowns, rush for a touchdown and catch seventh score during his time with the Jackets. He threw all five touchdowns and made his only start under center in his freshman year, while throwing for 181 yards on 15-of-37 passing.

After making the move out from under center, Smithley had a breakthrough year in 2008 with 23 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown.

Prior to coming to Waynesburg, Smithley was a three-year letterman at Laurel Valley, a first-team all-conference selection and a Ken Lantzy All-Star. He was also active as a basketball and hockey player.

After spending his first year as a GA working with defensive backs, he will coach the defensive line in 2010.
