Greg Johnston

Greg Johnston enters his third season at Waynesburg in 2025. Johnston worked with the Yellow Jacket tight ends in 2023, running backs in 2024 and will coach defensive backs in 2025.

Johnston was the position coach for the Presidents' Athletic Conference's leading rusher, Zayne Cawley, in 2024. Cawley rushed for 1,225 yards, the most for a Jacket back since Robert Heller led Division III in rushing in 2007. He collected All-PAC First Team honors and received All-ECAC status.

Johnston spent two seasons as head coach at Carrick in the Pittsburgh City League. Prior to his time with the Raiders, he served as offensive coordinator at Imani Christian Academy in 2017 and 2018. The Saints made the WPIAL playoffs during both of Johnston’s seasons, and boasted a 3,000-yard passer to go along with a pair of 1,000-yard receivers.

Before helping Imani light up the scoreboard, he served as wide receivers/defensive backs coach at East Allegheny. His efforts with the 2016 Wildcats helped the Blue and Gold end a 10-year WPIAL playoff drought.

Johnston’s decade of success got started with a run at University Prep in Pittsburgh that stretched from 2013 to 2015. While serving as their wide receivers coach, Johnston helped guide the Panthers to a pair of Pittsburgh City League titles.

Outside of the high school game, Johnston has also served as a volunteer coach with the Guyasuta Youth Football Organization. His coaching experience extends past the gridiron, as he has served as the head track & field coach at Oakland Catholic High School.

He graduated from Malone University in Canton, Ohio, in 2009 and competed in football and track & field for the Pioneers. His playing career also included time as a standout for the Schenley High School Spartans of the Pittsburgh City League.

Johnston’s time on the gridiron didn’t end at Malone. He spent time with the Erie River Rats of the American Indoor Football Alliance and was drafted in the fourth round of the inaugural Ultimate Indoor Football League by the Northern Kentucky River Monsters, before moving on to the Canton Cougars of the UIFL.
