Joe Kuhns boasts over 20 years of coaching experience on his resume. He is in his fourth season working with the Yellow Jacket linebackers.
Kuhns didn’t have to travel far for his first college coaching job after spending three years as the head coach at nearby Waynesburg Central High School (2009-11) His most successful stint as a high school coach came at California High School, where he served as head man from 2002 to 2008 and led the Trojans to some of the most successful years in the program’s history.
During his time at Cal, Kuhns was named the 2004 Tri-County South Conference Coach of the Year, and in 2007 was a finalist for the Washington/Greene County Coach of the Year award. Following a strong 2005 regular season, Kuhns coached his team to its first playoff victory in 19 years. The following season, the Trojans claimed the 2006 Tri-County South Conference championships.
Before taking over the head coaching job at California, Kuhns served as the defensive coordinator at Ringgold High School in 2000 and 2001, and held the same position at Jefferson-Morgan High School from 1996 to 1999. Prior to his time as the Rockets’ defensive back coach, he was the special teams/running backs coach at J-M from 1993 to 1995.
Kuhns is a 1997 graduate of California University of Pa., where he earned a degree in art education and played a year of free safety for the Vulcan football team. Prior to his college days, Kuhns was a three-year letter-winner at Beth-Center High School, from which he graduated in 1987. He earned all-conference laurels as a tight end and outside linebacker during his senior year with the Bulldogs. That same year, B-C won the Class AA Century Conference and made it to the WPIAL championship game.
