Frank Ferraro

Frank Ferraro enters his seventh season as head men’s basketball coach at Waynesburg University in 2009-10. The veteran head man is coming off of a 6-19 2008-09 campaign with the Jackets. His team also posted a 2-10 record in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play.

Four years ago, Ferraro enjoyed his most successful season as a collegiate head coach as he led the Yellow Jackets to a 16-11 overall record, a 7-5 conference record and an appearance in the PAC Championship game. With 16 wins, Ferraro and the Yellow Jackets doubled the previous season’s win total, while the seven conference victories were one better than the previous two years combined.

Ferraro is accustomed to success at Waynesburg. As an assistant, he helped guide the Yellow Jackets to 18- and 16-win seasons in 2001-02 and 2002-03, respectively. Those were the the last two years before legendary Waynesburg head man Rudy Marisa retired after 34 seasons of coaching. Ferraro, who coached summer basketball camps with Marisa at Waynesburg since 1983, brings an impressive coaching background at the high school level with over 20 years of experience.

Prior to coming to Waynesburg as an assistant in 2001, Ferraro was the head coach at Moon High School from 1998-2001, Burgettstown High School from 1983-1998 and South Fayette High School from 1979-1982. With over 200 wins at Burgettstown, Ferraro remains the winningest coach in school history. Ferraro coached Burgettstown to 12 WPIAL playoff appearances, five section championships and two appearances in the state playoffs.

His Blue Devil teams were ranked as high as second in the WPIAL and 10th in the state. From 1995-1997, Ferraro guided Burgettstown to a school-record, three-straight section titles. In 1995, Burgettstown’s 23 wins were the most in school history, while in 1996 he led the team to its first undefeated section record at 14-0.

This season, Ferraro will be joined on the bench by his assistants Lynnie Lynch, Shaun Mellinger and Zac Northen.

In addition to coaching at Rudy Marisa’s Tri-State Basketball Camp, Ferraro has coached at several camps since 1983 including camps at the University of Pittsburgh (1984-1995), California University of Pa. (1993-1995), Robert Morris University (1996-2000) and Eastern Michigan University (2000-2003).

Most recently, Ferraro has established his own instructional camp. This past summer, Ferraro held his fist annual “Dare 2 Prepare” Camp at Waynesburg. The camp ran in early to mid-July and was open to both boy and girl players.

Ferraro, a 1975 graduate of Duquesne University, resides in Coraopolis, Pa., with his wife Barbara, son Nick and daughter Sara.
