John Popeck enters his first season as in assistant coach with the Waynesburg University golf teams in 2024-25.
He brings to the program valuable playing and teaching experiences from his past experiences.
During his junior career, Popeck played in the United States Junior National Championship three times, where he tied the 58-year tournament record for the lowest 9 hole score (30) at Longmeadow CC in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. He also competed in the  Professional Golf Association Junior National Championship four times.
In one year, Popeck played in the Callaway Golf Junior World Championship at the Torrey Pines South Golf Course, where he finished 14th among 187 players. Popeck also played one year in the Sunnehanna Amateur Championship, Johnstown, Pa. and he had a 2nd place finish in the Harder German Junior Masters Championship at the Gut Neuzenhof Golf Club in Heddesheim Germany.
Popeck earned AJGA Rolex Junior All American Honorable Mention and completed his junior golf career with a top 10 Â ranking among 5, 500 players world-wide. In June 2006 Popeck was recognized as Golf Week Magazine Boys National Player of the Week.
Popeck attended the University of Maryland where he earned Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) All-American as a freshman and the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association honored Popeck as the Men's College Player of the Year.
Popeck turned professional in June 2011. On two occasions he reached the Sectional level competition for the United States Open and he once finished 2nd in the Pennsylvania State Open Championship. He played three years on the Florida mini tours and in one year Popeck reached the third level of Q School competition.
In addition to coaching at Waynesburg University, Popeck is the Head Teaching Professional at The Washington Country Club and the Pomykala Driving Range in Washington, Pa. Popeck also schedules teaching sessions at the Green County Country Club Indoor Golf Facility.
