Sean McCarthy

Sean McCarthy is in his second year as the head men's and women's soccer coach at Waynesburg University and will look to build on his teams' marked improvement in 2010.

The Yellow Jacket men featured a slew of freshmen seeing extended playing time last year and they stepped up to the tune of two more wins from 2009.

The Jacket women, on the other hand, enjoyed a breakout season under McCarthy. After going 6-12 in 2009, Waynesburg's overall record jumped to 12-6-3, with a 3-4-1 conference mark, leaving them one spot short of playoffs.

The Jacket men's and women's kickers also enjoyed a slew of individual honors. The Waynesburg men featured second-team All-PAC selection and PAC Offensive Player of the Week Erick Burke along with honorable mention midfielder David Floyd. The women boasted first-team honorees Courtney Ebersole at forward and Katrina Kelly in goal, along with honorable mention picks Danielle Danhires at midfield and Victoria Shepherd at defense. Ebersole, Danhires and then-senior defender Sarah Spicuzza were also selected as PAC Players of the Week.

McCarthy came to Waynesburg from SUNY (State University of New York) Old Westbury, where he was working in his second stint as the first assistant coach with the Panther men. His first stay at Old Westbury ran from 2005 to 2008.

In 2007, McCarthy helped lead the Panthers to the Skyline Conference title and the school’s first-ever berth into the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships. He also coached two players in the top 35 of Division III in scoring and a player in the top-50 for assists. That same season, the Old Westbury staff was named Skyline Conference Coaches of the Year and members of the Panthers won freshman and player of the year awards, respectively.

In 2008, McCarthy accepted an assistant coaching position with Division I Xavier University. After working a year with the Musketeers, he returned to Old Westbury. McCarthy also spent a year as a student assistant at Elizabethtown College in 2003.

Along with his collegiate coaching background, McCarthy has also worked with multiple soccer academies, camps, youth teams and professional teams. One of those stops came in Long Island, where he was an assistant coach for the Long Island Rough Riders of the Premier Development League (PDL) of the United Soccer Leagues (USL), which is  designed to showcase the top collegiate and professional players in the nation. The PDL is the largest professional/amateur league in the United States.

Along with his extensive coaching experience, McCarthy is also a seasoned player. During his collegiate playing days, which ran from 1999 to 2002, the newest addition to the Waynesburg coaching staff saw time with St. Joseph’s, Elizabethtown College and SUNY Old Westbury. Since 2002, McCarthy played for Florist Park SC.

McCarthy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Old Westbury in American Studies in 2004. He is also certified by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and is working on his certification with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).
