MEADVILLE, Pa. (Nov. 21) – The Waynesburg women's basketball team got solid efforts from several of their younger players as they pushed Allegheny to the limit in an opening-round game of the National City Tip-Off Tournament, which was hosted by the Gators.
Leading late, the Jackets couldn't quite hold on to a slim lead and fell by the final of 50-49.
Trailing 48-47 with 20 seconds left, Waynesburg jumped ahead 49-48 thanks to a lay up by sophomore forward Elisha Jones. Unfortunately, Allegheny's Stephanie Wolf came back and sank a lay up of her own to put the home team up 50-49.
The Jackets had one last chance to snatch away a victory, but a three-point try by freshman guard Hannah Hunter came up short with just two seconds left.
Though the Yellow Jackets came up just short of pulling out a victory, first-year head coach Sam Jones got a trio of double-digit scoring efforts from three of the team's youngest players.
Jones led the way with a team-best 12 points and a game-best seven rebounds, including three offensive boards. The native of Russell, Pa. also led the Jackets with three assists.
Hunter and fellow freshman Callie White added 11 points each. Hunter was efficient from the field as she connected on four-of-seven field goal attempts, including connecting on two-of-four three-point tries.
As a team, the Jackets connected on all three of their free throw tries and knocked down 12-of-23 field goal tries in the second half. Waynesburg trailed 24-23 at halftime, before playing the Gators evenly in the second period.
The Lady Gators were led by Emilie Simone, who poured in a game-best 19 points on eight-of-12 shooting.
Waynesburg finishes their two-day trip to Meadville tomorrow when they face Fredonia State.
