MEADVILLE, Pa. (Nov. 22) – For the second-straight day, the Waynesburg University women's basketball team battled an opponent down to the wire at the National City Tip-Off Tournament, which was hosted by Allegheny College.
Unfortunately, also for a second-straight day, the Yellow Jackets couldn't pull out a victory as they fell to Fredonia State 48-46.
The Jackets (0-2) got out to a 27-23 lead at halftime, but the Blue Devils (2-2) fought back and took the lead late in the game. Trailing 44-42 with less than three minutes left in the game, Waynesburg got a big lay up from sophomore forward Elisha Jones to tie the contest at 44 with 2:28 left.
After the Blue Devils grabbed the lead back on a two-pointer with 44 seconds left in the game, Jones connected on another lay up to tie the contest at 46-46 with just 24 ticks left on the clock.
Unfortunately, with just four seconds left in the contest, Jones fouled Angela Pucciarelli. The Fredonia senior calmly knocked down both free throws to seal the Jackets' fate.
For the second-straight game, Jones led Waynesburg in scoring by pouring in a game-high 24 points. She also led the team in rebounding for a second-straight contest with nine. Freshman guard Hanna Hunter also rolled up double-digit points for a second-straight night with 11. She also swiped away a game-high five steals.
The Blue Devils were led by Katie Landy, who racked up 16 points. She was part of a balanced scoring attack, which featured three players who put up at least nine points.
After averaging 13 points per game at the event, Jones was honored as one of six players named to the all-tournament team.
After a heart-breaking two days in Meadville, the Jacket women have little time to put it out of their heads as they return to action on Monday when they travel to La Roche College to take on the Redhawks.
