BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Jan. 10) – The Waynesburg women's hoopsters fell behind by 10 at halftime and couldn't recover in the second period as they fell by the final of 75-60 to a hot shooting Geneva team.
The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 4-8 overall, while the Golden Tornadoes improved to 7-5 on the season. The win was the third this week for the Geneva.
Throughout most of the first half, Waynesburg stayed within one basket of their hosts, trailing by just two (30-28) with 3:30 to go before heading to the locker room.
However, the Tornadoes rolled off a 10-0 run to grab a 40-28 lead with less than a minute showing on the clock. A two-pointer by sophomore forward Elisha Jones ended the run with eight seconds to go in the period to bring about the halftime score of 40-30.
After emerging from their locker room, Geneva did a good job of not only maintaining their lead, but growing it to as many as 20 (74-54) with 2:30 to go in the contest.
While the weather was cold outside, Geneva was hot from the field all game as they connected on 51 percent of their shots (23-of-45) from the floor, as compared to the Jackets, who struggled to a 36 percent (19-53) performance.
The Tornadoes were especially effective from beyond the three-point arc, hitting on seven-of-12 from downtown (58 percent).
Waynesburg was led in the stat sheets by Jones, who poured in a team-best 15 points. Freshman forward Callie White added 11 points. Junior guards Jenn Scarborough and Johnna Deco led the Jackets on the board and tied for the game lead with eight rebounds each.
The home team in black and gold was paced sophomore guard Christine Carugati and freshman forward Alyssa Miller, who tallied a game-best 19 points each.
The Jacket women will try to snap a four-game losing streak on Wednesday, Jan. 14, when they travel to Grove City to take on the Wolverines in a Presidents' Athletic Conference showdown.
