Jackets lose big early lead against Presidents

Box Score

WAYNESBURG,
Pa. (Jan. 17) – Despite a fast start to the contest, the Waynesburg University men's basketball team couldn't keep their momentum going and dropped a 78-60 contest to Washington and Jefferson Saturday night.

Thanks to some hot early shooting, the Yellow Jackets (5-10, 2-4) sprinted out to an 18-9 lead six minutes into the game. However, the Presidents (11-5, 3-2) responded with a 21-2 spurt of their own over the next nine minutes to take a 30-20 advantage and never gave the lead back for the rest of the contest.

After trailing 36-28 at halftime, the home team couldn't get any closer in the second period. W&J took control of the game as the clock ran down, leading by as many as 23 (76-53) with 1:18 to go in the game.

The Jackets were led by senior guard Zack Engel (shown above during a previous game), who tallied a team-high 13 points off the bench. Junior guard Jarell Rodriguez added 11 on the night. The senior-junior guard combination of Dan Happe and Ryan Courneen poured in 10 points a-piece in the loss.

W&J, which out-rebounded the Jackets 39-29, were led by a pair of senior big men in 6-8 center Josip Lucic-Jozak and burly 6-4 forward Wahab Owolabi. Both players recorded double-doubles as Owolabi rolled up a game-high 19 points to go along with 10 points, while Lucic-Jozak added 15 points and a contest-best 11 rebounds.

Waynesburg will try to snap out of a three-game losing streak on Wednesday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Monaca, Pa. to take on Penn State Beaver.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
