WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 17) – After falling behind by 15 at halftime, the Waynesburg women's basketball team refused to give up in the second period. Thanks to their efforts, they were able to bring about a respectable final score of 66-56 against number 25 Washington and Jefferson on Saturday night.
Shooting struggles haunted the Yellow Jackets (4-10, 2-4) throughout the first half of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup, as they managed to connect on just 17 percent (four-of-23) of their total shots. They also made just one three-point try out of 11 attempts.
However, the home team was able to turn it around in the second period, hitting on 16-of-31 shots from the floor (51.6 percent). They also showed much better touch from downtown as they drilled eight of 11 attempts from beyond the three-point arc.
Waynesburg displayed good heart late in the contest and trailing by 18 (63-45).
With just over two minutes left in the contest, the Jacket women went on an 11-3 game-ending run to bring about the game's final score.
Freshman forward Callie White (pictured above during a game from earlier this year) had a huge game, leading all players with 24 points, a career-best, on nine-of-19 shooting. Sophomore forward Elisha Jones added 12 points and a team-leading nine rebounds on the night.
The Presidents (14-1, 6-0) were led by senior forward Emily Hays, who dropped in a contest-best 18 points.
The Waynesburg women won't have to wait long to try and snap their current six-game losing streak, as they host Penn State-Greater Allegheny on Monday at the Marisa Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
