Women's hoopsters grit out PAC victory

Jackets take 46-36 contest at Chatham

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Jan. 21) – The Waynesburg women's basketball team won their second-straight game on Wednesday night when they took a low-scoring Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest from Chatham by the final of 46-36.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 6-10 overall and 3-4 in PAC play, while the Cougars fell to 8-8 on the season and 1-6 in the conference. The game's outcome put the Jackets in a five-team log jam for third place in the PAC.

After more than 3:30 of scoreless basketball, Chatham's Allason Holt put her team up 2-0 on a jumper in the paint. With 10:10 left in the first period, the Cougars built up a 7-3 lead, before Waynesburg responded with a 17-7 run over the next seven-and-a-half minutes to take a 20-10 advantage with 2:06 to go before halftime. Chatham stopped the bleeding enough to cut the deficit to eight (24-16) when the first half came to an end.

In the second half, the visiting team was able to build up a 31-16 lead with a 7-0 run over the first six minutes of play. However, with 3:45 left in the game, the Cougars were able to trim the deficit back down to five (41-36).

But Waynesburg put the game away by connecting on five-of-six free throws down the stretch and keeping their opponents off the board over the final few minutes of play.

Both teams struggled from the floor and shot barely over 18 percent on the night. One area that Waynesburg had an advantage in was from the free throw line, where they out-shot their opponents 80 percent (24-of-30) to 72 percent (13-of-18).

The Yellow Jackets also dominated in the paint, out-rebounding their opponents 52-34, including a 22-9 edge on the offensive boards. Waynesburg also held a 14-6 advantage in points in the paint.

Freshman forward Callie White recorded her first collegiate double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Both totals were game highs. Sophomore forward Elisha Jones rolled up eight points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Johnna Deco chipped in seven points and eight rebounds.

Sophomore Kayla Hilko and junior Libby Soeder paced the home team with eight points each.

The Jacket women return to action on Saturday, Jan. 24, when they host PAC rival Thiel. Waynesburg bested the Tomcats by the final score of 66-64 back on Dec. 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
