WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 24) – The first time Waynesburg and Thiel met this season, the Yellow Jacket women won on a last-second three-point play. During Saturday night's re-match, the Tomcats were the team providing the heroics as freshman forward Ashley Davis dropped in a running jump shot as time expired to lead her team to a 57-56 victory.
The loss dropped Waynesburg to 6-11 overall and 3-5 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while the Tomcats won their third in a row to get to 9-7 overall and 4-5 in conference action.
Through the first 10 minutes of the first half, the game remained tight, as Thiel held a slim 17-16 advantage with 9:24 to go until halftime. The Yellow Jackets grabbed the lead less than a minute later when point guard Erika Illig knocked down a three.
From there the Jackets went on a 15-4 run over the next eight minutes, putting them ahead by 13 points with 1:38 showing on the clock. Thiel responded with two jump shots by the PAC's leading scorer, senior forward Amber Jenae Bodrick, to trim the Waynesburg lead down to 34-25 as the two teams headed for their respective locker rooms.
In the second half, the two squads stayed fairly even through the first eight minutes-plus as Waynesburg held on to a 47-41 lead. With 6:31 to go in the contest, Thiel pulled to within two points of the host team (50-48).
The Tomcats were able to grab their first lead of the half (53-52) with 1:36 showing on the scoreboard. The Jackets' grabbed the lead back twice, the second time coming with just nine seconds to go, when freshman forward Callie White dropped in a layup that ended an almost 13-minute stretch since their last made field goal.
Ironically, White made that shot as well.
However, the Tomcats called a timeout to set up one last play. That play sent Davis sprinting down the court, stopping and popping near the right-side elbow and draining a short jumper as time expired, breaking the hearts of the Jackets and their fans.
Sophomore forward Elisha Jonestallied a Waynesburg-best 17 points in the loss, and sophomore guard Johnna Deco picked up her second double-double of the season after pouring in 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Thiel was paced by Bodrick, who rolled up a game-high 21 points and added a team-best nine rebounds.
The Jackets will try to get back in the win column on Wednesday, Jan. 28, when they host Bethany. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
