WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 28) – After keeping the game close through the first 20 minutes of competition, the Waynesburg women's basketball team ran out of gas in the second half and fell 69-56 on Wednesday night.
The loss dropped Waynesburg to 6-12 overall and 3-6 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while Bethany improved to 8-10 on the year and 4-5 in conference action.
The Yellow Jackets led 20-19 with 2:25 to go in the first period, but a pair of Stacy Goode three-points helped the Bison take a 26-23 lead into halftime. Bethany held a 14-6 advantage when it came to scoring in the paint over the first 20 minutes.
In the second period, Waynesburg took a 29-28 lead on a pair of Jen Scarborough free throws with 16:22 left in the game. That was the last time the Jackets held a lead on the night, as the Bison slowly put the game out of reach.
Both teams shot incredibly well at the free throw line as the Bison shot 94 percent from the stripe (15-of-16), while the Yellow Jackets connected on 13-of-14 from the line (93 percent).
Bethany continued its dominance when it came to scoring near the basket as they tallied 34 points in the paint, compared to just 16 for Waynesburg on the night.
The Jackets' stellar young forward combo of sophomore Elisha Jones and freshman Callie White each scored a game-high 16 points in the loss. Scarborough and senior forward Jeannette Wonsettler paced the Jackets on the boards with seven rebounds each.
The Bison were led by Goode and senior guard Caelyn DiSanti tallied a team-best 13 points each.
The Jacket women will try to get back on the winning track on Saturday, Jan. 31, when they travel to Latrobe to take on Saint Vincent. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m.
