CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (Jan. 3) –.Some white hot shooting from Thomas More allowed them to distance themselves from the Waynesburg men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon and propelled them to a 92-69 victory.
The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. The Saints improved to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in conference action.
While the final result certainly didn't show it, the game started very well for the Jackets as they raced out to a 9-0 lead after 3:30 of play thanks to a pair of baskets by senior guard Dan Happe, a three-pointer by junior guard Ryan Courneen and a hoop by senior guard Jason Clark.
After the Saints knocked down a three to stop the run, the Jackets responded with an 10-0 run to build an impressive early lead of 19-3. The lead continued to grow through the first half of the first period as Waynesburg led by as many as 17 (27-10) with 12:22 to go until halftime.
However, the home team proved that they could go on a big run of their own as they ripped off a 17-0 stretch over the next five-plus minutes to tie the game at 27-27. The Saints took their first lead of the game with just 1:21 left in the period when Colt Stafford knocked down a free throw to push his team ahead 43-42.
After that shot from the charity stripe, the Saints never relinquished the lead as they used several runs in the final 20 minutes of play to build a lead as large as 27 points (92-65) with 1:14 left in the game.
Though it came in a losing effort, Clark had a solid game, scoring a game-high 18 points on eight-of-12 shooting. Courneen and Happe added 16 points each on the day. Happe also pulled down a team-best six rebounds and clark dished a Jacket-high four assists.
Senior Matty Owens and sophomore Daniel McKeehan tallied 16 points a-piece to lead Thomas More.
Waynesburg will try to get back to .500 in PAC play on Wednesday, Jan. 7, when they host Westminster for a 7:30 p.m. showdown.
