WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 24) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team led early on during their Tuesday night game with Oberlin, but they couldn't hold the advantage as the game went on and fell 63-51 to the Yeomen.
The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 0-5 on the season, while Oberlin improved to 2-2.
The home team got off to a hot start by jumping out to a seven-point lead (11-4) four minutes into the game. However, Oberlin was able to trim the lead down to a handful of points and then took their first lead (20-19) with 6:01 to go in the half.
From there, the two teams went back and forth until half time, with the Yeomen holding a 30-28 lead as the teams went to the locker room.
Oberlin took control of the game during the first three-and-a-half minutes of the second period by going on a 6-1 run that put them ahead 36-29. From there, the visitors slowly built up a double-digit lead, and put themselves ahead of the Jackets by as many as 14 points (63-49), before taking the 12-point win.
Though it came in a losing effort, junior guard Steven Iser tied for the game-high in points with 16 before fouling out with just over one minute to go in the game. Iser connected on five-of-six attempts from the field and went three-for-four from beyond the three-point arc. He also connected on three-of-four free throw tries.
Senior guard Ryan Courneen chipped in nine points, and junior guard Erik Noone pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Oberlin was led by freshman forward Andrew Fox, who picked up a double-double on 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Fox was one of four Yeomen to record double-digit scoring effort.
A big reason for the Oberlin win was their work at the free throw line. They connected on 26-of-32 attempts from the charity stripe, while Waynesburg made just five-of-nine tries. The Yeomen also had a sizeable advantage on the boards, pulling down 42 rebounds, to the Jackets' 25.
Waynesburg is off until Dec. 5, when they host Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Bethany. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
