Lady hoopsters lose to Grove City

Visiting Wolverines use big second half to down Yellow Jackets

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 12) – The Waynesburg women's basketball team was able to stay within reach of Grove City for a half during their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) clash on Saturday.

 

Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets weren't able to keep up with the Wolverines in the second period and dropped a 76-56 decision at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The loss dropped Waynesburg to 2-4 on the year, and 1-2 in PAC play. Grove City is now 4-4 on the year and 2-1 in the conference.

 

The Jackets got the game off to a 4-0 start after a pair of baskets from freshman forward Paige Pearce. However, the Wolverines went on a 7-3 run to tie the game (7-7). Grove City then went on a 6-0 run to take a 13-7 advantage, and never relinquished the lead.

 

Waynesburg was able to trim the advantage down to two points (28-26) with 3:28 to go before halftime. The Wolverines built their lead up to 36-32 as the first half came to an end.

 

GCC was able to put the game away by out-scoring Waynesburg 40-24 in the second half. The visitors opened the productive period with a 6-2 run that resulted in a 42-34 lead.

 

The Wolverines out-shot the Jackets from the floor (12-of-31 to 8-of-25), the free throw line (13-of-14 to 7-of-12) and from beyond the three-point arc (3-of-7 to 1-of-5) during the big second half.

 

Waynesburg's chances for a win were also hindered by committing 30 turnovers.

 

Junior forward Elisha Jones led the Jackets with a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds. Senior Johnna Deco added seven points in the game. Grove City was paced forward Christine Slater, who poured in a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds. She also dished out a game-high six assists and swiped a contest-best three steals.

 

The Jacket women will try to get back on the winning track when they travel to Kenyon on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
