WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 19) – Sophomore forward Callie White led a group of five Waynesburg women's basketball players to reach double digits in scoring on Saturday as the Yellow Jackets beat La Roche 79-67 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The win improved the Jackets' overall record to 3-5, while the Redhawks fell to 6-3.
Waynesburg was able to control the contest from start to finish, and opened the game with a 22-12 run that lasted for half of the opening period. The home team was able to keep the Hawks at bay and held a 41-32 lead at halftime. The first 20 minutes of the contest produced one of the Jackets' top offensive performances of the year, as they shot 61 percent (17-of-28) from the floor and 60 percent from beyond the three point arc (6-of-10).
The Jackets continued their strong play in the second half and led by as many as 19 points (68-49) with 7:27 to go in the contest. The Jackets were able to keep the game in control as the contest wound down to its conclusion.
The home team out-performed their opposition in several offensive categories, including field goal percentage (47 percent to 35 percent), three-point percentage (44 percent to 20 percent) and rebounding (49 to 39).
After a bit of a slow start to her season, White exploded off the bench and scored a team and personal season-high 21 points in the win. Junior forward Elisha Jones and sophomore Morgan Hoone chipped in 14 points each, while freshmen Brittany Spencer and Paige Pearce added 10 points a piece.
Senior Johnna Deco pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, while Pearce added eight boards.
The Redhawks were led by Chantelle Jennings, who recorded a game-high 34 points in the loss.
Waynesburg returns to action on Dec. 29 and 30, when they host Alfred, Nazareth and Mount Union for a four-team event. The Yellow Jackets will face Nazareth on the 29th.
