WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 5) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team played right with visiting Bethany through the first half of their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown on Saturday at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets couldn't keep it up in the second half as the Bison were able to pull away for a 70-52 victory. The loss dropped Waynesburg to 0-6 on the year and 0-1 in PAC play. Bethany improved to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in conference action.
Trailing 32-26 with just minutes to go in the first half, the Jackets went on a period-ending 6-0 run to knot the contest at 32-32. In the second half, the two teams went back-and-forth through the first five-plus minutes, and a three-pointer by guard Steven Iser gave the Jackets a 41-40 advantage with 14:35 to go in the contest.
Unfortunately, the Bison went on a 30-11 run to end the game and pick up the victory.
Though it came in a losing effort, senior guard Ryan Courneen went off for a season-high and game-best 20 points. Iser also broke the double-digit mark with 11.
The Bison were led by senior forward Jonas Ankrom, who put up a team-high 18 points. Freshman Nick Wilcox added 14 points and tied for the game lead in rebounds with eight. Bethany's Joe Testa also pulled down eight boards, as did Waynesburg's Erik Noone.
Speaking of working the glass, Bethany held a big advantage in rebounding, besting the Jackets by a 52-25 margin. The Bison also had a better day at the free throw line, hitting on 20-of-28 tries, to Waynesburg's three-for-seven effort.
The Jackets return to the court on Dec. 12, when they host Grove City in a PAC contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
