WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 5) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team caught fire from the floor in the second half of their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest against Bethany on Saturday and won a thriller over the Bison.
The Yellow Jackets shot 50 percent (16-of-32) during the final 20 minutes of play en route to a 60-58 victory over Bethany. The win improves Waynesburg's overall record to 2-3 and evens their PAC mark at 1-1. The Bison dropped to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
Both teams shot just 38.5 percent from the floor in the first period on identical 10-of-26 efforts. With the game tied at 26-26 at halftime, Waynesburg went on a 10-4 run to open the second period and grab a 36-30 lead with 14:43 to go in the contest.
Over the next seven minutes, the Jackets were able to build their lead up to as many nine points (53-44) and looked like they would cruise to victory. However, the Bison battled back and trimmed the lead down a single basket with time winding down.
Clinging to a two-point edge with time winding down, Waynesburg was finally able to celebrate their win as a three-point attempt by Carly Garneau failed to find its mark as time expired.
The Jackets rode a balanced scoring effort that featured four players scoring at least eight points to victory. Junior forward Elisha Jones led the attack with a team-high 13 points. Freshman forward Brittany Spencer and sophomore guard Morgan Hoone chipped in 12 points each, while freshman Paige Pearce added eight in the win.
Spencer and senior Johnna Deco each pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, while guards Hannah Hunter and Kristen Lucci dished out six and five assists, respectively, to lead all players.
Bethany was led by sophomore guard Anne Wilson, who piled up a game-high 19 points.
Waynesburg will try to keep their winning ways going on Saturday, Dec. 12, when they host Grove City for a 1:30 p.m. PAC showdown.
