Jacket women drop Geneva

Forwards lead Waynesburg to 65-58 victory

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 11) – Led  by a combined 42 points from the forward combination of sophomore Elisha Jones and freshman Callie White, the Waynesburg women's basketball team won their second game in a row on Wednesday night when they downed Geneva 65-58.

The win improved the Yellow Jackets' record to 8-14 on the year, while the Golden Tornadoes fell to 8-13 overall. The victory also avenged a 75-60 loss that the Jackets suffered at the hands of Geneva earlier this year.

Waynesburg jumped out to a 33-25 lead at halftime thanks in part to a 43 percent shooting performance in the first half (13-of-30). The Tornadoes, on the other hand, managed to connect on just seven-of-22 attempts (32 percent).

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets increased their advantage to as much as 17 points (57-40) with 10:02 to go in the game. However, Geneva got back into the game by cutting the home team's lead down to six (60-54) with 2:47 to go in the contest.

Waynesburg responded to the 14-3 run with a 5-2 spurt of their own to take a 65-56 lead to seal the victory. Geneva's Rachel Barry connected on a lay-up with 16 seconds to go in the game to bring about the final score of 65-58.

White led all scorers with 24 points, while Jones added 18 points on the night. Senior forward Jeanette Wonsettler chipped in 10 points to the winning effort. Junior guard Johnna Deco led the Jackets with nine rebounds, while freshman point guard Hannah Hunter came one point away from a double with nine points and a game and team season high 10 assists.

Hunter also showed good durability by playing all 40 minutes on the night.

Geneva was led by senior guard/forward Michawn Rich, who poured in 23 points and eight rebounds. Both of those totals were team highs.

The Waynesburg women will return to action on Saturday, when they host Grove City.
