WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 14) – Though all three of Waynesburg's seniors played well on senior night, the Yellow Jackets lost a slim lead late on Saturday night and dropped a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest against Grove City by the final of 76-69.
The loss dropped Waynesburg to 6-16 overall and 2-9 in PAC play. Grove City improved to 11-10 on the year and 5-6 in the PAC.
The Yellow Jackets looked strong in the first half, building a lead as large as 11 points (30-19) with 5:43 to go before halftime. They maintained firm control of the contest when the two teams went to their respective locker room and the Jackets had a 34-25 lead.
When the second half got underway, the Wolverines out-scored the Jackets 16-7 to tie the game at 41-41. The two teams battled back-and-forth for most of the half and, with 1:25 left in the game, the Jackets still held a one-point advantage (69-68).
However, Grove City's Joe McCoy knocked down a three-pointer to give the Wolverines the lead for good at 71-69. It also began an 8-0 run by the visitors that led the GCC win.
While Waynesburg was solid from the floor in the second half (45 percent), Grove City was absolutely on fire, connecting on 19-of-30 from the field (63 percent). The Wolverines also made five-of-seven (71 percent) from beyond the arc and eight-of-10 from the free-throw line.
When the dust settled on the final 20 minutes of play, GCC out-scored the Jackets in the second half 51-35.
Waynesburg's three senior honorees all had big nights against Grove City. Guard Dan Happe led the team with 17 points and five rebounds, while forward Colby Grubich added 16 points and a career-high six blocks. He also connected on all eight of his field goal attempts. Guard Jason Clark chipped in 14 points and a team-best three steals.
Freshman guard Larry Alexander also had a solid night on the court, going for 10 points and a game-high seven assists in just 21 minutes of play.
Grove City was led by junior center Andy O'Keefe, who poured in a contest-best 18 points. He was one of five Wolverines who reached double digits in scoring.
The Yellow Jackets wrap up their regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when they travel to Washington and Jefferson to battle the Presidents.
