GREENSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 17) – With temperatures dropping into the 30's outside, the Waynesburg University men's tennis team got their spring season underway in the climate-controlled confines of the Greensburg Racquet Club against Saint Vincent.
Despite winning two-of-three doubles matches, the Yellow Jackets suffered a 5-4 loss at the hands of the host Bearcats, for whom the match was also a season-opener.
Sophomore Emile Khoury enjoyed a stellar start to his season, as he was one of only two singles victors for the Jackets, beating the Bearcats' Paul DiVincenzo 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. The Dubois native began his day by teaming with junior Jeff Canning to claim victory at second doubles. The duo bested Saint Vincent's Troy Smith and Dan Chirdon 8-4.
The Jackets also got a win at number one singles, thanks to the work of senior Kevin Houseknecht, who downed Zac Parkhill in straight sets 6-0, 7-6 (4).
Waynesburg's other victory this afternoon came from the team of Adam Woodruff and Dustin Cozad, who beat Saint Vincent's Tyler Camaione and Paul DiVincenzo 9-7 at number three doubles.
Waynesburg will return to the courts on Saturday, Feb. 21, when they head north to take on Penn State Erie, the Behrend College. The match is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. and the Waynesburg women will also be competing.
