Waynesburg women lose at nationally ranked W&U

Yellow Jackets can't overcome shooting woes in 51-37 loss to Presidents

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 18) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team couldn't overcome some serious shooting troubles as they dropped a 51-37 road Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest to Washington and Jefferson.

 

The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 8-16 overall and 4-9 in PAC play. The Presidents improved to 21-3 on the year and 11-2 in conference play.

 

The Presidents' Emily Hays opened up the game by hitting a pair of free throws and W&J never trailed during the contest. W&J opened up a 31-19 lead at halftime, and saw their lead grow to as much as 23 (51-28) as the game wore on.

 

The Presidents, who are ranked number 21 nationally by d3hoops.com, out-shot their opponents 40 percent (20-of-50) to 24 percent (15-of-62) from the floor.

 

Waynesburg was led by freshman forward Callie White, who scored a team-best eight points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Malaeja Leggett added seven points on the night.

 

W&J was led by forward Maggie Gibson, who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

 

The Jackets conclude their regular season on Saturday, Feb. 21 when they host Chatham College for senior night.
