NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 24) – After falling behind 40-36 at halftime, the Waynesburg men's basketball team couldn't find a way to get back in the game in the second period and dropped a 94-78 decision to Westminster in the first round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament on Tuesday night.
After taking an early 4-1 lead in the contest, the Yellow Jackets gave up a 10-0 run to the Titans, giving them an 11-4 advantage. The visiting team didn't regain the lead until there was 4:34 to go in the first half. Waynesburg built a 32-30 lead after junior guard Jarell Rodriguez dropped in two of his four points on the night.
However, after retaking the lead (33-32) on a three-pointer by Max Spinner, Westminster never trailed for the duration of the night. The home team built up leads as large as 25 (82-57) in the second half as they went on to victory.
The Titans simply overwhelmed the Jackets in the second half, hitting on 57 percent (17-of-30) of their shots from the field and an impressive 60 percent (nine-of-15) of their shots from beyond the three-point arc.
Waynesburg's two best scoring performances on the night came from their bench. Sophomore forward Jeff Young put up a team-best 17 points as a reserve, and junior guard Ryan Courneen added 16 points. Young also led the Jackets with eight rebounds.
The Titans' top individual performance also came from their bench as standout junior forward Ryne Murray poured in a game-high 26 points and yanked down a contest-best 13 rebounds.
The Waynesburg men end their season with a 6-19 overall mark, including their season-ending loss to the Titans.
