Waynesburg women prevail at Westminster

Yellow Jackets ride 19 points from Elisha Jones to 57-52 win

WILMINGTON, Pa.) Feb. 7 – The Waynesburg women's basketball team got revenge on Westminster for a loss earlier this season by downing the Titans by the final of 57-52 on Saturday.

 

The win improved the Yellow Jackets' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) record to 4-7 and their overall mark to 7-14. The Titans fell to 3-8 in conference play and 6-14 overall. The victory also ended a four-game Jacket losing streak.

 

The Jackets got out to a 22-11 lead with 4:15 to go in the first half after a 14-0 run erased a three-point Titan lead (11-8). Waynesburg was able to maintain their double-digit advantage until halftime as they took a 31-19 lead into the locker room.

 

The Jackets' took advantage of 12 Westminster turnovers, converting them into 13 first-half points.

 

When the second period tipped off, the home team went on a 9-0 run to trim the Jackets' lead down to three (31-28). Westminster cut the advantage down to one (32-31), before Waynesburg responded with a 6-0 spurt to build their lead back up to seven (38-31).

 

The two teams continued to battle down the stretch, but the Jackets never trailed in the second period, sealing their five-point win with a Johnna Deco free throw with three seconds left on the clock.

 

The victors were led by sophomore forward Elisha Jones, who poured in a game-high 19 points on nine-of-15 shooting. On her first basket of the night, Jones went over 500 points since joining the Jackets. She now sits with 517 career points.

 

She also came a rebound away from a double-double after yanking down a contest-best nine boards. Jones also swiped away a team-best three steals.

 

Freshman forward Callie White added nine points to the winning effort.

 

Westminster was led by junior guard Amy Dolsak, who tallied a team-best 18 points.

 

The Jackets will try to keep their winning ways going on Wednesday, when they host Geneva. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
