MARIETTA, Pa. (March 18) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday with an impressive 6-3 road victory over Marietta College.
The win improves the Yellow Jackets' record to 1-2. It was the season-opener for the Pioneers.
The Jackets got the match off to a tremendous start by winning their first two doubles matches of the day. At number-one doubles, the team of Kevin Houseknecht and Jeff Canning picked up a dominant 8-1 victory. The Jacket duo of Peter Mally and Emile Khoury followed with an 8-2 triumph at second doubles.
After dropping the match at number-three doubles, Waynesburg got back on track at number-one singles, where Houseknecht earned his second win of the day by downing Marietta's Bruce Kitchens 6-2, 7-6 (5).
After the Pioneers cut the team match score to 3-2 with a victory at second singles, Waynesburg went on a three-match winning streak that clinched the team's first win.
At number-three singles, Mally looked impressive as he cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ryan Whitnable. Khoury became the team's third member to get his second win of the match when he beat Clint Perkins 6-3, 6-3.
Adam Woodruff capped the win streak with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Bruno De Faria.
The Jackets are off until March 24, when they open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play when they host the 18-time defending conference champions from Grove City.
